Crunchy Date and Nut Energy Balls
This Date and Nut Energy balls recipe is a delicious option for a healthier snack, I have them as midmorning snack and it keeps me going until lunchtime. The sweetness from the dates goes just perfect with a nice cup of black coffee, keep them handy to satisfy your sugar cravings. Dates are great to use in energy on the go snacks, they provide essential nutrients and are rich in minerals like potassium. Their natural sugar content is high. On dried fruits between 50 and 80 % which makes them perfect for people who do sports or have an intellectually demanding job.
For me, the dates are an acquired taste, I’ve started to enjoy their sweet and rich flavour after I have moved to the Uk, where dates are used in a traditional dessert recipe, the sticky toffee pudding. As I started experimenting with this dessert and understanding its flavour, I also started to wonder how would it go with earthy spices. One day, while heating up a portion of sticky toffee pudding and it’s super sweet banana caramel sauce, we have decided to mix in freshly ground black pepper and cloves. It just made sense, and the aroma that spread across the room had only anticipated my confidence that it would be a winning bet. It worked so well on the sticky toffee that I have repeated the spice combination on these date and nut energy balls.
Time in this house is precious, we both have long working hours, so every time we cook we transform it into a frenzy because in the end I am a chef and he has way too many ideas. I tag all of these moments like ‘episodes’ on my mind, ‘the 20 variations of cheesecake’, ‘cookies 16 different ways’, ‘the feta cheese sweet and savoury frenzy’. Good moments but back to the date nut energy balls. My days are powered by tea and coffee and mom says should always have a little snack along these drinks, tired of cookies and nuts due to their high fat content we decided to give a try to the date balls trend. The recipe is quick, easy to make and versatile, you can use nuts and spices according to your own preferences.
I have made two batches and to make it simple, started by blitzing the dates into a pure with coconut oil, cocoa powder and half of the nuts. I have used pecan nuts and almonds, I thought of using cashew nuts but I think its flavour would be completely overpowered by the dates. If you don’t like crunchy texture blend all the nuts together with the dates. Then mixed the remaining nuts and divided the pure into two bowls. One batch I finished with cinnamon and cardamom powders and the other with a more pungent spice mix, black pepper and cloves. They are both so good that I’ve decided to share with you my take on the date and nut energy balls.
