Indian Garam Masala Spice Blend Recipe

Garam Masala Spice Blend Recipe, this mixture gets its name from its properties, Garam Masala means hot in hindi and it is said that this mixture raises the body temperature. Used in buttered rice and vegetable pilafs it works especially well in root vegetables and cauliflower, also widely used in curry dishes and not exclusive to Indian cuisine as it is also used in the Japanese Katsu curry.

Garam Masala Spice Blend Recipe:


  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 5 green cardamom pods
  • 2 black cardamom pods
  • 1 large Asian cinnamon stick
  • 1 + ½ tsp cloves
  • 2 blades of mace
  • ¼ nutmeg
  • 1 Indian bay leaf
  • ½ tsp black peppercorns
  • ½ tsp white peppercorns


Dry roast all the spices in a pan over medium heat until fragrant, leave it to cool then grind into powder.
